Rockstown & Dunaff

Rockstown Harbour is simply stunning, with huge Atlantic waves breaking on its pebbled beach, and wild seabirds bobbing about on the building sea swells just beyond. Rockstown Bay is set around a shallow horseshoe shape, to give some level of protection to swimmers and leisure craft alike. Nearby Fort Dunree is located 10km north of Buncrana on the coastline of the beautiful Inishowen Peninsula. And just to the north of Fort Dunree is Dunaff  Head with its panoramic vistas of the Atlantic Ocean and the Urris Hills.

Fort Dunree is situated high on the shores of Lough Swilly, commanding majestic views of the Lough, and its shorelines. The Fort has been occupied by various forces over the years reflecting the vagaries of politics in this part of the country. The Fort Dunree Heritage Museum was originally opened to the public in 1986, and has entertained tourists of all ages ever since. The Fort has undergone extensive refurbishment in recent years with the development of a network of walking paths, the restoration of former military buildings, and the reinstatement of fixed armament displays.

With spectacular natural wonders and man made marvels, Rockstown’s Dunaff Head, is breathtakingly beautiful. Whether you wish to find the essence of Irish culture, or simply relax and rejuvenate, Dunaff Head will not disappoint. Its Glenevin Waterfall is a must-see for tourists who enjoy nature at its best. Water descending from such astounding height will simply leave you awestruck. Nearby the ruins of Carrickabraghey Castle stand on a big rock known as the “Friars Rock” which is nestled near the Isle of Doagh. It is said that the castle was erected by Phelemy Brasleigh O’Doherty in the 1600. The 7 circular towers and the oval bawn, are most impressive.

It is hard not to fall in love with the beauty and simplicity of Rockstown Harbour.
