Rosbeg

A few miles west of Portnoo is the fishing and holiday hamlet of Rosbeg, situated on one of Ireland's most entrancing headlands.

The story of the west coast of Ireland is the story of man and the sea, and the enduring struggle to make a livelihood out of poor rock strewn coastal land. It is a story which is echoed all along the western seaboard, but nowhere is it more apparent than the Dawros Peninsula where the deprivations of generations past can be seen in the ghosts of ancient cottages sprinkled across the landscape. An all of the wild beauty of Dawros and Rosbeg was worth nought to families struggling to survive the elements, and the seasons, and the immoral demands of their landlords. And they lived and died and left no mark on the ancient beauty of the place save for piles of old stones, and the occasional abandoned cottage. And today it is that stunning legacy that draws visitors to Rosbeg and its hinterland. In the summer months, the great unspoiled treasures of Rosbeg are a delight to all who visit, and the village has built a faithful following who come back year after year. Life in Rosbeg is focused around the sea and on the great outdoors, with wonderful beaches, surfing, trekking, pony riding, and climbing. The bustling fishing port of Killybegs, too, is only a short drive away, and is a fascinating insight into the tough world of Atlantic trawling. Better still, in the evenings Killybegs comes alive with good restaurants, and even better hostelries.

There are many safe beaches in this area of rugged beauty, such as Fintra and Traighmore, both are a haven for surfing enthusiasts. At Traighmore, there is an extensive caravan and camping site.
