Enniscrone

The picturesque seaside town of Enniscrone has many great treasures, among them a wonderful 3km sandy beach, one of the very best links golf courses in Ireland, and its very own brand of quaint traditional seaweed baths. Kilcullen’s famous Seaweed Baths have stood on the sea front at Enniscrone for over a hundred years. They retain all their traditional period features, with huge roll top baths, Turkish steam boxes, piping hot seawater, and freshly gathered seaweed. It’s said that there’s nothing quite like bathing in warm rich seaweed for unwinding, soothing aches, and restoring a sense of wellbeing!

Enniscrone’s golf course, too, is known far and wide, but it is only one of many outdoor activities on offer in beautiful Enniscrone. Its beach is famous for surfing, and is ideal as it is long and safe. Several surf schools operate from Enniscrone Beach, including “North West Surfing”, and “7th Wave Surf School”. The beach is also host to a number of very well attended summer surf camps. Tracey’s Surf Shop, too, offers everything you could possibly need on or off the water!

Enniscrone town lies on the mouth of the fabled Moy Salmon River, and is a very popular spot with anglers too. As the name suggests salmon is the great prize, but trout and grilse will be on the menu also. This year the town revived the great horse racing festival which used be run on the beach more than a hundred years ago. One of the highlights of its summer is the “Enniscrone Black Pig Festival” which is held in early August. It celebrates the demise of a fabled wild boar which ran amok in the town many centuries ago. The festival brings four days of wonderful fun for everyone, and it culminates in a particularly colourful carnival and street parade. The Black Boar Festival is perhaps best known for its rather wild Raft Race which sees much of the town take to the water in a variety of precarious rafts. Indeed, much of the fun is provided by the less seaworthy rafts which don’t quite float as their builders might have hoped.
